Board MembersSharon Pigman (President) Sharon Pigman is currently employed as a life and health insurance agent for Swanberg/Judkins Insurance, Inc. Her background includes several positions in the affordable housing field, including being a founding board member of the Northern Communities Land Trust, in Duluth, Minnesota and serving as chair of the Low-Income Housing Consortium in Duluth. She is currently also a board member of Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor. Charles Richardson (Vice President) Charles Richardson moved to the island from a coastal community in California, where he was acutely aware of the issues of affordable housing in areas of increasing home prices. In his younger years, Charles was involved with groups who successfully fought off developers who were attempting to replace an historically-significant small-scale urban neighborhood with a massive redevelopment, so he is very much aware of the importance of preserving the character of a community when dealing with issues of growth and change. A long-time self-taught student of sustainable building models, he believes that we must be aware of resource use and environmental impact in any efforts to increase our housing stock, and never sacrifice long-term sustainability for short-term solutions. Laura Tuttle (Treasurer) Laura is an attorney licensed to practice in the State of California. Prior to moving to San Juan Island, she practiced criminal defense, juvenile law and family law in San Anselmo, California. Laura and her husband, Doug Tuttle, moved from Petaluma, California to San Juan Island in June of 2007. She joined the Board of the Home Trust in October of 2007, and has served as its Treasurer since July, 2009. This is her second term on the board. She enjoys volunteer activities involving the Soroptimists, the Land Bank, and 4-H Auctions. Joyce Stimpson (Secretary) Having lived in Friday Harbor since 1979, Joyce raised her two sons here and they are now both in college. You might recognize her as one of the familiar faces at San Juan County Health and Community Services. As well as working in a myriad of environmental health programs there, Joyce says, "I also get to indulge my lifelong passion for children and families in WIC, the Women Infants and Children Program. I enjoy working with the Prevention Coalition and The Home Trust as my favorite community collaborations, and personally, I 'm challenging myself to grow more of my own food, practice the art of illustration and to expand the difficulty and distance of my running routine as a means of sustaining health and peace of mind." Sam Buck Sam is a third generation islander with 5th generation grandchildren. He has been a Realtor on San Juan Island since 1988 and has a background in farming, commercial fishing and experience in the field of natural health. Sam has been involved with and supportive of the need for affordable housing since his first meeting with Larry Soll some 5 or more years ago. Sam played an important role in working with his cousins to create a win-win situation for them and the Home Trust. They saw the vision, understood the need, and together with the Home Trust expended many hours to bring it all together and become a reality. “I enjoy seeing children on the streets and in the schools,” Sam said. “Having affordable housing insures children will always be a part of our community.” Peter Kilpatrick Peter Kilpatrick has lived on San Juan Island for 35 years. He is the President and owner of Ravenhill Construction, Inc., the largest residential contractor in San Juan County with 29 full-time employees. Peter Kilpatrick has been a volunteer fire fighter for 15 years and is currently Lieutenant of Station 6. He is chairman of the Home Trust’s Building Committee and has donated countless volunteer hours to the Home Trust’s building projects. Judy Welch Judy Welch came to Friday Harbor about 10 years ago, lured to the island by its beauty and the unique and varied people. In 2005 she bought her first home in the Salal Neighborhood, and worked with neighbors to develop a lovely rock garden and other landscape projects in common areas at the Salal. She joined the Arts League, and served for 8 years as treasurer on the board. Judy also participated in the Sunshine Gallery Co-op until it closed, and presently displays her art work at the Island Studios Store. Providing Home Health personal service to those in need, and also pursuing a part-time career as an Occupational Therapist at Inter-island Convalescent Center, keeps Judy busy helping others. Jenny Benedict Jenny is one of the two new homeowners in the Salal neighborhood. She is a single mother, volunteer firefighter, and full time student. Jenny says, "I am grateful for an organization like the San Juan Community Home Trust and would like to be able to participate in keeping this wonderful program in order for other struggling families to have a chance at life on San Juan Island. I'm open-minded and stand-up for what I feel is right. I will do my best if elected to help in any way I can." Molly Hogan Molly Hogan has lived on San Juan Island for almost 25 years, raising her 4 children here. The youngest will graduate from FHHS in June. Since 1997, Molly has worked at Kings Market and is now the manager of the front end of the grocery store, or the checkout area. "Having pleasant interactions with locals and visitors as they shop and buy their groceries is the best part of my job," she says. Good cinema is her passion; she hopes to attend the Toronto Film Festival in September '10. "I look forward to being a homeowner in the Salal Neighborhood and serving as a board member of the Home Trust," Molly says. Coincidentally, Molly closed on her new home TODAY: November 23, 2009!! |
